Traditional and Baroque music from Spain and South AmericaAt the foot of the Torre del Oro in Seville, from where galleons once sailed to the New World, blossoms the music of Alonso Mudarra, the Sevillian grandmaster of vihuela — this string instrument of Aragonese origin, this string instrument of Aragonese origin, cousin of the lute — and a pioneer figure in the first accompanied solo arias. Based on her folías, tientos, canzones and villancicos, where popular traditions and scholarly writing respond with finesse, Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata undertake a musical crossing of the Atlantic. The ensemble creates a dialogue between the elegance of the Spanish Renaissance and the Baroque legacies of South America. From the rhythms of Spain to the pulsations of the Andes, a shared history is thus woven: that of music in motion, which travels, metamorphoses and continues to resonate, from one shore of the ocean to the other.
