A pioneer of early music and a living legend of the lute, Hopkinson Smith presents, with his characteristic refinement, a selection of enchanting works written for the Renaissance lute around 1600. Where Elizabethan composers such as John Dowland and Anthony Holborne favoured melancholy and dance, the Italian counterpoint of Girolamo Kapspberger’s toccatas is illuminating on account of its inventiveness and avant-garde modernity.
