Gaelle Solal & the Ardeo Quartet

Echoes from Latin America

The first string quartet of Villa-Lobos unfolds imbued with a certain nostalgia, animated by rhythms of dance in a popular style and ending in a comical fantasy and with a humorous fugue. Born in 1863 in Rio de Janeiro, Ernesto Nazareth is one of the first known composers of Brazilian origin; his music never ceases to bridge the gap between European models and the rich popular traditions of his country, which is what makes all the charm of his piano pieces transcribed here for guitar and string quartet. And the guitar alone will also be in the spotlight with two concerto cadences, one, that of Villa-Lobos, having become a “classic”, the other, from the pen of a young Latin American composer, symbolizing the vitality of the instrument's new repertoire.
